A routine afternoon spent working on his pickup truck turned into a terrifying confrontation for a former Marine in Maryland, who says he fought back after four teenagers allegedly surrounded him and pointed a handgun at his head during an attempted robbery.
Jheyco Borda was working on his vehicle near Oxon Hill High School at approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when the group approached him, according to his account of the incident. The teenagers, reportedly wearing hooded sweatshirts, allegedly surrounded him and demanded his keys, cellphone and other belongings.

Surveillance footage captured the confrontation, including the moment one suspect wearing red, white and blue clothing allegedly produced a firearm and aimed it at Borda’s head.
But the encounter took a dramatic turn when the armed teen briefly became distracted. Borda, who said his military background included hand-to-hand combat training, seized the opportunity to fight back and attempt to take control of the weapon.
The struggle quickly intensified, prompting Borda’s brother to rush in and help.

During the confrontation, the firearm discharged, sending a bullet into Borda’s pickup truck. The vehicle was left with a visible bullet hole, but neither brother was struck by the gunfire, according to Borda.
The danger was not over. As the fight continued, another alleged suspect attempted to join the confrontation. Borda’s brother reportedly intervened, grabbing the teenager as the two brothers worked to restrain the group.
Together, the men managed to force the suspects onto the pavement and hold them there until law enforcement arrived.

Prince George’s County police officers subsequently took all four teenagers into custody, Borda said. The suspects were reported to be in jail following the incident.
The encounter highlights how quickly an ordinary activity can escalate into a potentially deadly situation when a firearm is involved. Borda’s military training may have helped him recognize an opportunity to resist, but the discharge of the weapon underscored the danger faced by everyone involved.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the alleged attempted robbery to come forward and contact the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Investigators are expected to rely on available surveillance footage and other evidence as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
For Borda and his brother, the encounter ended without either man suffering a gunshot wound. However, the bullet damage to the truck serves as a reminder of how narrowly the confrontation could have ended in tragedy.
