As I lay in the hospital bed, the room around me was filled with the steady beeps of machines and the cool, sterile smell of antiseptic. My world was a swirl of pain and confusion. But through the fog, I felt the warmth of Wyatt’s hand holding mine, a tether to reality and a reminder of everything worth fighting for.
The police had come and gone, taking my statement and speaking to Wyatt. They were kind and professional, but their questions made everything feel even more surreal. How could I explain the betrayal of my own family, their desire to shatter my life for the sake of greed and twisted loyalty to Melanie?
A nurse entered the room, checking the bandages around my face with gentle hands. “You’re lucky,” she said softly, adjusting the IV drip. “The injuries could have been much worse.”
I gave a small nod, even though every movement felt like a struggle. Lucky wasn’t the word I would have chosen, but I was grateful to be alive and grateful for Wyatt’s unwavering presence.
Wyatt leaned closer, his eyes filled with concern. “Sadie, I spoke to the police again. They said there were six witnesses. The electrician, the neighbors… they all saw what happened.”
I closed my eyes, relief washing over me. It was hard to believe that others had witnessed my parents’ cruelty and were willing to speak up. “And the will?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “What about the will?”
Wyatt hesitated. “It’s complicated, but it seems like there’s an old will from your grandfather. It might change everything. But we’ll have to see what the lawyers say.”
The mention of my grandfather felt like a distant memory coming to life. He had always been kind to me, often pulling me aside during family gatherings to share stories and wisdom. I never imagined that he might have left something behind that could alter the course of all this madness.
As the day turned into night, I lay there thinking about the events that had brought me to this hospital bed. My father’s anger, my mother’s cold laughter, and Melanie’s ambition all felt like pieces of a puzzle I was slowly piecing together. But instead of feeling defeated, I felt a growing strength within me. They had tried to take everything away, but they had also given me something: clarity.
I knew now that my future wasn’t tied to their acceptance or approval. It was tied to the choices I made for myself, beginning with seeking justice for what they had done.
Wyatt stayed by my side, his presence a constant reminder that love wasn’t about appearances or convenience. It was about standing together, even when the world seemed determined to tear you apart.
As exhaustion pulled me into a restless sleep, I knew the battle was far from over. The road ahead would be difficult, filled with legal battles and emotional scars. But I also knew I wasn’t alone.
